Record-Breaking Heat Wave Hits California

Several areas in Oregon, California, and Arizona have experienced intense heat waves in the past few days. Forecasters indicate that there won't be any reprieve anytime soon.

Forecasters said that millions of people in the Western United States were sweltering in the record-breaking heat wave on Saturday, and there was no sign of relief in sight for the next few days.

 

Many areas and deserts of Arizona have seen stifling temperatures these days. A National Weather Service Jacob Asherman forecaster said that the ridge of high-pressure air parked over much of the West was causing temperatures to soar because it prevented hot air near the surface from moving higher in the atmosphere.

Heat Wave Hits California Oregon and Arizona

While many of these towns expect triple-digit temperatures every summer—Las Vegas, for example, was forecasted to hit 117 degrees this past weekend—some inhabitants in other locations were taken aback by what seems to be an extended period of scorching days.

"In particular for children, the elderly, people with disabilities, and people who work outside, both the record-breaking temperatures and the length of heat present a clear and present danger," Ms. Kotek stated.

This weekend, city officials in Portland installed up outside misting stations at parks and created cooling centers where residents could take refuge in air-conditioned room.

As temperatures rose into the upper 90s on Saturday, downtown Portland's light rail and streets were nearly empty. But traffic was heavy on Highway 26, which led from Portland to the cooler beach.

There was cold drinks, watermelon slices, potato salad, and other refreshments at the city's sole official cooling facility. About 20 homeless people arrived, which is extremely dangerous during heat waves. There were also yoga mats available for those who wanted to lie down.

According to Mr. Sacks, around 50% of Ashland residents lacked air conditioning in their houses, and more would probably want assistance if the heat wave 

This week, the heat was oppressive in many Western cities, even those that were used to triple digit temperatures. On Friday, the oasis in the California desert known as Palm Springs achieved a record-breaking high temperature of 124 degrees. 

“I didn’t think Redding got that hot,” Mr. Asherman said. “It’s a scorcher.”

Officials across Western states warned that the extreme heat and winds could spawn new wildfires in the days ahead.

Warm weather in and around Yosemite National Park, which reached 103 degrees in Yosemite Valley on Saturday, was making things more difficult for firefighters battling a 908-acre wildfire that broke out on Thursday close to Mariposa, California.

Millions of people from Texas to New Jersey were living in dangerously hot and humid circumstances. Friday's record-breaking high of 106 degrees was reached in Raleigh, North Carolina.

According to Mr. Asherman, the triple-digit temperatures will persist far into the following week, progressively causing suffering in the Plains states. 

“I hate to be the bearer of bad news,” he said. “The pattern is so stagnant.”
